Few people know that Madrid is home to a winemaking tradition dating back to at least to the 12th century, as recorded in texts by Cervantes and Lope de Vega. Established in 1990, DO Vinos de Madrid encompasses more than 50 active wineries and over 22,000 acres of vineyards to explore. Its wines feature local white varieties such as Malvar and Albillo, as well as red Garnacha.
Traditional methods, such as those at the century-old Anís Chinchón, are blended with the most innovative ideas at wineries such as Moradas de San Martín, Tierra Calma, and Valleiglesias, among others.
